Patient Information

Consultation

In most circumstances, after we have assessed the referral from your GP, our administration staff will contact you to arrange an initial consultation with your chosen surgeon. In some cases to facilitate a timely appointment we may offer you the choice of seeing a different surgeon. We ask that you bring any information you think may be relevant to this consultation, including a list of medications you are on. If you are insured with Southern Cross it is helpful to bring your Southern Cross number.

Initial consultations typically last for 20-30 minutes, your surgeon will question you and examine you as required. This is usually followed by a discussion of your problem, and options for investigation or treatment. Depending on your problem, further action may vary from simple ongoing observation through to further investigation or definitive surgery.

Booking elective surgery

If you require surgery, in most cases you can be given a potential surgical date on the day of your consultation. You will be provided with the booking forms for our preferred private hospital (Southern Cross, Hamilton) which need to be filled out and sent to the hospital ahead of your surgical date. You will be provided with an estimate of costs, that will include surgical, anaesthetic and hospital costs. If you have health insurance, you will need to ring your insurer with this information in order to get “pre-approval” for the procedure. If your insurer requires extra information we are happy to provide it. Pre-approval is not required for Southern Cross affiliated provider procedures (see below).

Affiliated Provider Surgery

If you have health insurance with Southern Cross, certain procedures can be done under the Affiliated Provider scheme. These procedures may include endoscopy, inguinal hernia (laparoscopic and open), laparoscopic cholecystectomy and some others. Under this scheme you do not need to obtain preapproval (we do this for you), and all accounts are paid directly for you (in simple terms you never see an invoice). Expansion of affiliated provider schemes is one way that Southern Cross can help keep premiums as low as possible for their members, and as such is strongly supported by our practice.

ACC Surgery

You may have a surgical health problem that is a result of an accident and where cover has been accepted by ACC. Inguinal hernia is a common example. Please bring your ACC claim number to your consultation if you have it. If surgery is required for your problem, following the consultation we prepare and application for elective surgery called an “ARTP”. This has to be processed by ACC before they grant acceptance for surgery, this can take 3-4 weeks in most cases. Once we are notified of acceptance of the ARTP, we can typically book surgery for a date shortly after.

Medications

If possible please bring with you a list of your current medications. In particular we want to know if you are on any blood thinning medications such as aspirin, warfarin, digabatrin or clopidogrel.

Anaesthetic

In most cases your anaesthetist will be in contact with you by phone a couple of days before your proposed surgery date. All of the anaesthetists that we work with are members of the Royal Australasian College of Anaesthetists and are highly respected and experienced. Occasionally they may require to meet you a couple of days before surgery, if so this will be arranged.

Direct Access Endoscopy

Sometimes it will be apparent from your GP’s referral letter, that an endoscopy (upper GI endoscopy or colonoscopy) is likely to be required. If we think it is appropriate, our administration staff may ring you and ask if you would wish to proceed with direct access endoscopy. This essentially means the first time we meet you is just before the procedure, rather than seeing you for consultation first. The purpose is to limit costs and time delay for you. Direct access endoscopy is always optional for you - we are always happy to see you for consultation first if you would prefer.
